The metropolitan borough of Calderdale is located in the South Pennines in West Yorkshire and is made up of six towns sitting along the valley of the River Calder - Brighouse, Elland, Halifax, Sowerby Bridge, Hebden Bridge and Todmorden, as well as many other villages.
The minster town of Halifax was a centre of wool production and is home to The Piece Hall - one of Britain's most outstanding Georgian buildings and the world's only remaining cloth hall. Following a huge renovation, The Piece Hall reopened in 2017 and offers a fantastic venue hosting concerts and events with a range of shops, restaurants and bars. Another landmark in Halifax is Dean Clough, a former textile mill extending over ½ mile long which has been converted to a hotel, restaurants, theatre, gym and office spaces.
Having a wealth of history and landmarks Halifax's Wainhouse Tower is the tallest folly in the world sitting a prominent 77 metres high and can been seen for miles across the Calder Valley.
Shibden Hall is located just outside Halifax in the Shibden Valley and was the home of Anne Lister. The recent TV series 'Gentleman Jack' was filmed at Shibden Hall and surrounding locations. Other TV series have also been filmed in the area 'Happy Valley' and 'Last Tango in Halifax' are also based there.
Inventor of the road reflecting 'Cats Eye' Percy Shaw was from Boothtown, Halifax. Mackintosh's confectionery also began in Halifax with the manufacture of their famous toffee and 'Quality Street'.
Calderdale has 2 selective state schools which are Crossley Heath School and North Halifax Grammar School, as well as Rishworth School which is an independent. The Calder Valley Railway line provides rail links to Leeds and Manchester and there is an upcoming proposed development for a new railway station to be opened in Elland. Situated along the M62 motoway corridor, Calderdale is an ideal base for those looking to commute. With a mixture of urban and rural locations, you are never too far from some fantastic landscapes and views. Walkers and cyclists can access the Calder & Hebble Navigation as well as Calderdale Way.
