Heckmondwike is a small market town which can be found within the Kirklees Metropolitan district and forms part of the Spen valley area. Offering easy access to major towns and cities with good road and rail links. Convenient links to the major motorway links are easily accessible and railway stations are handily located nearby.
Home to the ever-popular Heckmondwike Grammar School, families are often drawn to the area keen to have their children educated in this very well regarded and top scoring school which dates back to 1898.
Offering a mixture of historic buildings along with modern developments, fantastic local amenities and ample outdoor facilities, this makes Heckmondwike a popular choice with generations of families.
Surrounded by 8 miles of Spen valley greenway which provides links to surrounding towns without busy roads, this popular route is often frequented by locals and visitors alike.
Cyclist and families are attracted to the safe and often rural environment the greenway offers.
The nearby Oakwell Hall is also a popular attraction locally with something for all the family. The Grade I Listed Elizabethan manor house, apparently even boasts to have its own ghost!. Apparently Charlotte Bronte was a visitor in the 1830's and used the setting in her 1849 novel Shirley. The impressive outdoor areas extend to around 110 acres of country parks and has nature trails, playground and picnic areas, along with a mountain bike track, café and plenty of space for children and pets to explore.
Heckmondwike is also home to the first of the 'Christmas illuminations' dating back to the 1930's, and in fact some buildings still bear the original gas light fittings! By the 1950's technology had advanced to the electric lightbulbs and thousands of people from across the North attended to witness the grand light switch on. Apparently the 1950s and 60s was the most impressive time for the Heckmondwike Lights and gained the towns nickname of "Little Blackpool".
